Unit 5: The Subtle Mind Exercise

I enjoyed this weeks exercise. Although I have a very active mind and have a hard time quieting my mind, I found the exercise very relaxing. Like I said, I have an active mind so it was hard at time to dissolve the random thoughts that popped into my head, but having something to return my focus to (breathing) was helpful. I enjoyed this week's exercise more than last week's because this week we were focusing on quieting our mind whereas last week our brains were purposefully active.

Spiritual wellness, mental wellness, and physical wellness are all interconnected. One cannot be truly well (in a holistic point of view) if all three aspects of wellness are not in sync. This connection manifests itself in my life most plainly when I exercise. Physical exercise not only offers my the opportunity to exercise my physical wellness, but also my mental and spiritual wellness. For example, when I am lift weights I focus mainly on my breathing. During this portion of my day is when my mind is the most clear and calm. This time provides me with the opportunity to speak with God, practice subtle mind exercises, and physically exercise.

  1. Colin,
I have a very active mind and silence has never been something I like very well I used to always need background noise at all times. When I started doing yoga I also started working on quieting my mind and this has become an on going process. I later picked up centering prayer and that has helped me progress in making my mind still and learn to focus. I liked the subtle mind to and found it relaxing and insightful.

  2. I agree so much with you, that was my biggest frustration not being able to concentrate because my mind kept buzzing, I tried but it seems as if there is so much going on this week that I could not concentrate. I noticed that even when I am not in a hurry I still act like I am in a hurry I believe I am just used to doing things fast and quickly. I hope to be able to relax like everyone else seems to be doing as well.

  3. I did not like this week’s exercise as much as last weeks because of the long pauses. Although the pauses quieted my mind, I was easily startled when the spoken part began again. I also have a very active mind, and sometimes I find it hard to be able to calm my mind. I completely agree with you that spiritual wellness is just as important as physical and mental wellness. I have learned how important spiritual wellness is first hand through previous experiences, and I have made the commitment to continue to grow spiritually.
