Unit 6: Meditation and Assessment

Although at the beginning of the meditation, I felt rather silly repeating those four phrases. On the surface they are just words that do not mean anything if you are only repeating them. However, if you pause for a moment, change your attitude to a more open and positive mindset, and focus on exactly what you are saying then it is not just a silly word repetition exercise. Instead, it is an exercise in which you are wishing others will experience health, happiness, and wholeness. Once I changed my attitude the whole dynamic of the meditation shifted in a more positive direction.

During my assessment of myself I realized my biggest source of difficulty and suffering comes from not knowing what I want to do when I grow up. I only have another year and a half in the military, and for the last couple of years I have been wanting to pursue physical therapy. However, I recently looked into the prerequisites I would need to accomplish in order to apply and the lest included 16 classes! That turned a three year program into a five year program! And to make matters worse, even if I completed all of the required prerequisites there is not guarantee I would make it into the physical therapy program. So, now I am unsure if that is the profession I want to pursue after the military and it has caused some headaches. I know that God is in complete control and he will direct me toward the path He wants me to take; but letting go and trusting in Him is not always easy. Prayer and meditation both help calm my mind and relieve stress.

  1. Hi Colin,
I understand your point about the meditation exercise. I also had the same opinion; that at first these were just phrases, but by changing your attitude, you are creating an open mind. A mind that says, “If I try, it may work.” Possessing an open mind is one of the most important attributes in the world today, because without an open mind, we are unable to believe in anything, especially the healing power of the mind.
Good luck with your future endeavors. It sounds like you have an open and trusting mind, and you are putting your faith in God to lead you down the path that is right for you. I have also learned to do the same, and I know that it will not come without some bumps in the road. I truly feel that God has me on the path that He intends for me to follow. It is so important to keep your open mind and your Faith, because as I have found out, these two aspects are probably the most important aspects of our lives. As many people agree, “beauty comes from the inside” and what can be more beautiful than someone with an open mind, good Faith, and able to practice loving-kindness toward themselves and to others?

  2. Colin, I think that is the exact reason as to why this exercise is made to repeat the words 10x when one sees this from a far they may think it is silly but once you are doing the exercise it does make you think, wonder & feel. -Leslie

  3. Sounds like this class is right up your alley right now! Just remember that the time keeps passing, no matter what path you take. Do what you are passionate about! I also thought the exercise this week was challenging and different, I still loved the message.

  4. Hi Colin, I felt silly as well. It is so hard for me to find a quiet place to focus. I have kids and they are with me 24/7 and I can never seem to find that peace that I so desperately need. I need to make it a priority and like you said I need to change my attitude as well. Great post!
