Unit 8: Exercise Review

Throughout this course, we have listened several different types of guided meditation sessions. At the beginning of the class I was skeptical about these sessions and did not think they would serve their purpose. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The session I enjoyed the most and found most beneficial was the very first exercise we did, the power of suggestion. It was the exercise in which we envisioned our blood flowing to specific regions of our bodies. I really enjoyed this exercise because I could feel the physiological effects of the meditation (my hands were warmer after the session and my arms were heavier when I envisioned blood flowing into them). 

My other favorite exercise was the subtle mind exercise. Although I did have a little trouble quieting my mind at times throughout the session, I did feel much more relaxed after the session was over. One of the things I found most enjoyable about this session was the sound of the waves crashing. Having my breathing to concentrate on was also soothing. 

I could use these meditation techniques in my personal life in a variety of ways. For example, I could the subtle mind exercise before I go to sleep. That would be a good way to quiet my mind and help me fall asleep quicker. I could use the power of suggestion exercise when I get overwhelmed at work. Taking a few minutes to focus on something other than work would help reduce stress and make me more productive when I returned to work.

  1. Hi Colin, I actually do a variation of the Power of Suggestion exercise every night when I go to bed. I allow myself to lie very still and feel the soft sheets under every part of my body as each body part gets heavier and sinks down into the mattress. I have been doing this for years, and I have not even realized that it was a form of meditation until recently. It helps me feel safe and secure in my bed, especially because I am the only one there (as funny as that may sound, but many women feel a sense of security and safety when a man is lying next to them, so this helps with that absence). I find that I sleep better when I practice this before going to sleep. I also remember my arms feeling much heavier when envisioning blood running through them during this exercise. I also agree with you that reducing stress leads to increased productivity at work.

    That was my favorite also. This course has helped me with meditation and reminded me of the benefits of doing it. Although I start out tired and end even more tired than I started lol it is good for winding down and refocusing energy. I enjoyed reading your blog.

  3. Colin, I am happy to hear that you were pleasantly surprised by your experience with guided meditations. Many people do not relate to the guided meditations immediately and decide that none of them will be useful. It is so important to keep an open mind, to keep searching for new guides and, once you are ready, start meditation without a guide.

    There is great skill in accomplishing the still meditation, I believe the greatest rewards are found in complete stillness. I have not reached a point in my meditative journey where I am able to meditate without a guide or personally guiding my sessions, but I hope to one day. Thank you very much for sharing your experiences, keep it up!
